Delamore Arts is an annual exhibition of sculpture and art, set in the beautiful gardens of a country house at Cornwood near Ivybridge in South Devon. As I am now developing various forms of glass garden sculpture it made perfect sense to apply to exhibit for the first time this year, and I was delighted to be accepted.
I have made four sculptures for the exhibition - three of them form of a trio which are displayed together as a group, but are available to purchase or order separately. These are from my Flying Fish series, each one slightly different. The three glass panels (30cm, 40cm and 50cm diameters) are set into steel holders which are mounted onto stained tanalised timber posts, set into the earth.
The fourth is a large standalone statement piece, and the result of months of development work, experimenting with colours and the composition of my design. I wanted to create a large panel with a minimalist support structure so that the colourful glass would be the main focus, without anything to detract from it. The result is titled Joyous Descent, and is a semi-abstract depiction of gulls swooping down to their catch in the waves, beneath a vibrant sun. The art glass panels have been laminated on both sides with toughened glass and the overall thickness is over 2omm so it is very sturdy. It is 45cm wide and 180cm tall, held secure in a purpose made aluminium channel which is weighted down by a concrete block set deep into the ground.
Below are some photos of the four sculptures, including behind the scenes shots of some of the making processes, which involved making several scaled down versions before I was happy to make the final piece, and the installation.
Delamore Arts is open every day throughout May 2023. Please visit the Delamore website for opening times and visitor information.
